Schoolreaders - reading volunteers for local primary schools

at School Readers

Role Description

Do you have an hour or two to spare each week? Would you like to support primary aged children with their reading?
Schoolreaders volunteers are matched with a primary school local to the them which they visit once a week for an hour or two and listen to children read individually. During this time the volunteer will help to develop the children's reading and comprehension skills as well as hopefully helping the children to find a love of reading. Reading for pleasure at a young age has a significant impact on a child's future education and life chances and spending some time each week with a Schoolreaders volunteer can really make a difference.
We do not ask for any specific skills or prior experience but all our volunteers must be over 18, have good written and spoken English and be able to commit to their weekly school visits for at least a year (this is termtime only and holidays and appointments can be taken during term time).
Our volunteers really feel like they are making a difference in their local community and often get as much out of their volunteering as the children, albeit in a different way.
